Community outreach programme

Community outreach programme in association with Mahatma Eye Research Foundation (MERF) is an integral part of our hospital which takes eye care services to the door step of the community. This fulfils our vision of providing quality eye care to everyone. Apart from this it also serve to educate the local community on eye care. Our primary goal is to fight against preventable and curable blindness through this programme. We would like to ensure that not a single person goes blind due to absence of timely and proper care at community level.

We conduct regular screening camps in and around our locality as well as in remote and rural areas. Patients are screened for refractive error, cataract, glaucoma, retinal disorders etc and are referred to our respective departments for specialised care. We also conduct school eye screening programmes to screen children as well as educate teacher about eye care in children.

We had carried out totally 173 free eye camps spanning in 4 districts of Kerala-Calicut, Malappuram , Kannur and Wayanad with the help of Mahatma Eye Research Foundation. For the last four and half years, approximately 24,000 patients had been consulted at the camps attended by the people from different walks of life.

We have the privilege of conducting the school screening for school children between 7 to 17 years , the concept named ‘ I SEE ‘ Project was launched at the district level screened 36,000 school students in and around Calicut. We, in association with Mahatma Eye Research Foundation, have started a new initiative “ Drug Bank ” to provide glaucoma medication for glaucoma patients free of cost. This drug bank opens every day morning to evening. Any glaucoma patients with prescription and BPL Card or the document proves the BPL category can avail medicines from our drug bank. This type of initiative is first in this field.

Academic Programmes

A health care system is only as good as the personnel in it. Realising the need for qualified and well trained supporting staffs, the hospital provides training to ancillary staff such as Optometrists, Orthoptists etc. We conduct yearly CME programmes for doctors and optometrists in and around the city.

We provide hands on clinical attachment to optometry students from other institutions like Al-Shifa institute of paramedical science, Perinthalmanna and Malabar Medical College, Calicut as well. We ensure that they are given proper exposure in all fields including hospital reception, EMR, OP clinic, Opticals, Pharmacy, Laboratory and to all equipments and procedures. With a view to advance the careers of the future optometrists, we have started “Finishing School of Optometry”. The course is of 3 months duration, with active in house training for all the students. It also includes case discussions with consultants, lecture classes, and hands on learning the craft of fitting and dispensing the perfect prescription lenses. Study material would be provided.

Apart from this, our doctors used to conduct public information talks on media-Radio ( AIR) and Visual Medias ( Asianet, Darsana, Mathrubhumi, Media-one, etc.)
